How to Treat Sinus Headaches
Many people suffer from sinus problems, and sinus congestion and inflammation can cause a very common sinus symptoms: Sinus headaches. These headaches are usually characterized by a pressure-like pain that is located in an area of your face or head. This pain can leave your face tender to the touch and can become worse with movements of the head. If you find yourself having constant sinus headaches, your best bet is to see a healthcare provider, but in this blog we will explore some remedies you can do at home to help alleviate the pain.
Over-the-counter pain relievers: Non-prescription pain relievers like acetaminophen (Tylenol) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen (Advil) or naproxen (Aleve) can help relieve sinus headache symptoms. These drugs target the inflammation caused by the underlying sinus symptoms.
Nasal decongestants: Over-the-counter nasal decongestant sprays or oral decongestants(Sudafed) can help reduce nasal congestion and relieve sinus pressure. However, nasal sprays(Afrin) should not be used for more than a few days to avoid rebound congestion.
Use saline nasal irrigation: Nasal saline rinses, such as neti pots or saline nasal sprays, can help clear out nasal passages, thin mucus, and promote sinus drainage, decreasing the pressure in your sinuses and relieving the pain from your headache
Warm Compress: Using a warm compress on your forehead can help to relieve pain and pressure from your sinuses. A warm compress can best be made by using a damp washcloth with warm water.
Other tips: Steam from a hot shower, and maintaining proper hydration are some final tips to help with your sinus headaches.
If you are suffering from chronic sinus headaches, many of these remedies are not recommended to be used on a routine basis.
