Melatonin sleep spray benefits and usage: Fall asleep fast
Causes for sleeping difficulties are many, but for the majority of the affected they are manageable and can often be resolved by simple lifestyle changes and natural sleeping remedies such as a melatonin sleep spray or a liquid melatonin.
So let me tell you one true bedtime story, chapter by chapter, in hopes of helping you fall fast asleep at night, for all nights to come.
The story of the sleeping beautifully
Once upon a time, in a kingdom far, far away, the sun would go down, and all the world would doze off into beautiful, restorative sleep. The kingdom would then wake up fresh and eager - and with good reason.
Sleep is our most essential necessity, one which plays a crucial role in physical and mental health. Many people view sleep as simply a time when their bodies shut down and their minds rest, but sleep actually performs a variety of important functions that are essential for overall health and well-being.
During sleep, the brain processes information and consolidates memories, which helps improve learning and problem-solving abilities and can also enhance mood and emotional regulation. Sleep also provides an opportunity for the body to repair and regenerate cells and tissues, which is essential for maintaining physical health and fighting off diseases.
The tale of the sleepless times
Then came the midnight oils, the phones, the screens, the coffees, the drinks, the 24/7 news, and the drive-throughs. Once mighty sleep seemed to have become a luxury, something we get to do when and if we get everything else done.
Today, estimates are that 50 to 70 million people in the United States alone suffer from sleep problems. Experiencing a chronic lack of sleep, or sleep that is poor in quality can lead to health issues like diabetes, obesity, hypertension, heart disease, and depression.
And while sleep stress, anxiety, pain, congestion, or other medical issues are the most common causes patients report in my daily practice, I still feel that, in most cases, it’s actually a lifestyle issue.
People are so busy these days and it's so common to have irregular sleep schedules, too much screen time, and excessive caffeine or alcohol consumption. I’ve found that, in most cases, behavioral and lifestyle changes can improve our rest.
The forgotten sleep essence: Melatonin
As in any good bedtime story, there is a way to retrieve our long-lost sleep. To find it, we need not search the world - we only have to take a look deep within.
Melatonin is a hormone that regulates our internal biological clock i.e. the sleep-wake cycle, and is naturally produced in the brain by the pineal gland. It is released in response to darkness, to signal to the body that it is time to prepare for sleep, and has been shown to be helpful for people who have trouble falling or staying asleep due to disruptions to their normal sleep schedule. As such, melatonin is often recommended for those who suffer from insomnia or jet lag.
Melatonin has also been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and may play a role in maintaining a healthy immune system. There are other potential benefits for certain health conditions, including seasonal affective disorder (SAD), depression, anxiety, and migraines. However, more research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits and risks of melatonin for these conditions.
How does a melatonin spray work and how to use a melatonin spray?
Once we’ve found what we’ve been looking for, it is time to sprinkle (or should I say spray) the proverbial (melatonin) magic dust.
Enjoy Good Health melatonin supplements are formulated by doctors and backed by research, in order to provide us all with Deep Zzz’s and help us fall and stay Fast Asleep. They are natural supplements derived from real nutrients and are meant to be taken two hours before bedtime.
Our melatonin supplements can be used in the form of 3 mg pills, or a liposomal spray which is meant to help active ingredients work better in the body, making them more effective and reducing the risks of side effects.
How long does it take for a melatonin spray to work?
Melatonin spray typically takes 30 minutes to an hour to start working. However, it can take up to 2 hours to reach its full effect. Melatonin spray is absorbed quickly through the mucous membranes in the mouth, so it works faster than melatonin capsules or tablets.
Here is a timeline of how melatonin spray typically works:
0-30 minutes: Melatonin is absorbed through the mucous membranes in the mouth.
30-60 minutes: Melatonin starts to work, and you may start to feel sleepy.60-120 minutes: Melatonin reaches its full effect, and you should be asleep.
The happy, sleepy ever after
Of course, since each of our bedtime stories is different, the road to happily ever after also varies from person to person, as does the cause for the sleep difficulties.
However, these commonly recommended strategies usually help.
Try to:
Establish and maintain a regular sleep schedule
Create a sleep conducive environment
Avoid caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol before bedtime
Consciously make an effort to manage stress and anxiety.
It's important to understand the role sleep plays in overall health and well-being and to prioritize adequate and quality sleep as part of a healthy lifestyle.
The Mad Hatter and other chapters to skip
As a doctor, sometimes I feel I’ve heard it all.
Tales of sleep problems due to lack of balance in the body's energy centers (chakras), exposure to electromagnetic fields from electronic devices, and of people trying to solve them by wearing a hat made of aluminum foil to block out electromagnetic fields or by sleeping in pyramid-shaped structures to improve energy balance and sleep. I’ve heard of teas made from dried insects and people who drank them… and I can say you can safely skip it all.
The bottom line is: If melatonin and lifestyle changes help - great.
If you are still having difficulty sleeping or are concerned about the quality of your sleep, the best idea is to speak with a healthcare provider to determine the best course of treatment.
