Why Do We Snore? Exploring Common Causes

Many people sleep each night unaware that they snore, whereas many others constantly hear complaints from their partner over the loud snoring noises keeping them awake. Snoring is something that can affect people of all ages and is usually a sign of some sort of obstruction in the flow of air in the mouth and nose. In this blog, we will be going over some of the main causes of snoring.
Sleep Apnea: A very significant symptom of sleep apnea is snoring. Sleep apnea is a serious condition characterized by repeated stops and starts in breathing throughout sleep. It may be best to consult your doctor if you suspect you have sleep apnea as it can lead to future complications.
Nasal/Sinus Problems: Chronic nasal congestion or a deviated nasal septum (the wall between the nostrils) can cause you to snore, as they obstruct the airflow as you breathe during the night.
Anatomy of the Mouth: Individuals with a low, thick soft palate, or those who have enlarged tonsils or adenoids, might have a narrower airway which can cause snoring. Similarly, being overweight can lead to extra tissues in the throat that contribute to snoring.
Age: When you reach middle age and beyond, your throat becomes narrower, and the muscle tone in your throat decreases, causing snoring.
Sleeping Position: Individuals who sleep flat on their back are more prone to snoring, as it can cause your tongue and surrounding soft tissues to relax back, blocking some of the airflow.
Alcohol Consumption and Sleep Deprivation: Alcohol consumption and sleep deprivation lead to sleep which further relaxes the muscles of the throat, potentially leading to snoring.
Occasional snoring is usually not a sign of anything serious, rather it just may be a nuisance for your partner. If you snore regularly it may disrupt the quality of your sleep, or even be the sign of something more serious.
If you are concerned that your snoring may have an impact on your health, it is recommended that you speak to a healthcare professional. For those of you with an occasional night of snoring, looking at the causes listed above and adjusting your lifestyle accordingly may just do the trick!
